Officially known as “The Star Wars Holiday Special”, this Christmas television program was a huge disappointment to many fans of the “Star Wars” movie. Set some time after the end of the first movie (“A New Hope”), the holiday special offered a glimpse into Wookie society and culture as Leia, Han, and Luke honored the Wookies by celebrating “Life Day” with them. Naturally Darth Vader and the Empire got involved.
Because television Christmas specials don’t have much of a budget this brief interlude in the serious business of defeating the Empire was constructed from cheap dialogue, occasional sets, and lots of Wookie costumes. But every tired 1970s’ era television special trope was thrown into the mix.
George Lucas reportedly attempted to buy all the master copies of the special so that it would never be shown again. Carrie Fisher claims she plays it at home whenever she wants her guests to leave. Nonetheless, this special is remarkable for introducing some of the concepts and characters that appear in films.
If the trailer below does not discourage you from watching this horrible production, you should be able to find more than one pirate copy on the Internet. You should also have your head examined. I, personally, would rather kiss a Wookie than suffer through the Holiday Special ever again. Maybe even the bottom side of a Wookie.
